The Challenge
WLR’s Frederick, MD headquarters features a training center where new employees learn about the company’s history, culture, and values. They had a clear vision: to inspire new employees by showcasing their rich, nearly 40-year history. But the challenge was: how do we turn that vision into a dynamic, engaging, and scalable environmental graphic that would leave a lasting impression?
Every great partnership starts with the right questions.
- WLR has a specific vision; how can we realize it?
- How can we ensure that the design feels cohesive yet dynamic?
- What materials are available and cost-effective?
- Will the experience resonate with employees?
The Solution
Graphcom partnered with WLR to create timeline signage that makes their 40-year history accessible and scalable for future expansion.
While much of the headquarters is well decorated, a site visit revealed an untapped opportunity: the stairwell leading to the training room. This discovery opened new possibilities for designing a timeline that could inform and inspire.
From there, the design process unfolded—as it often does—in a non-linear way. Early plans focused solely on the training room, with clean, linear visuals that conveyed a sense of progression. But with a shift in perspective to the stairwell, we presented multiple design directions, ranging from structured layouts to more fluid, vibrant concepts. The WLR team ultimately chose a design that mirrored local roads, with “nodes” representing milestones in WLR’s history.
Bringing that vision to life required our team to take a flexible, solution-oriented approach to several practical challenges. Material limitations meant all text had to be flat vinyl, with three-dimensional elements kept close to the wall. Installation presented its own hurdle, as our team meticulously aligned vinyl sheets in a narrow, crowded space.
One unexpected challenge arose with a fourth wall featuring company culture images. Due to the lighting and grain of the aluminum substrate, some photos appeared completely black. Quick thinking and swift reinstallation resolved the issue, ensuring a flawless final result.
The Results
When all was said and done, WLR had a stunning set of environmental graphics spanning four walls, three of which are in the stairwell. The scalable design allows future updates to be added to the training room. Design features include full-flood vinyl maps with WLR’s timeline following local roads, creating a sense of movement and progression.
The finished project is more than just a timeline; it’s an experience that lets employees and visitors alike walk through WLR’s history, gaining inspiration and a deeper connection to the company’s legacy.
“Together, WLR and Graphcom have built not just a working relationship, but a true partnership—one that grows stronger year after year. And for that, I am truly grateful.”
