#CultureOfGood: Celebrating National Nonprofit Day

by | Aug 14, 2024

At Graphcom, nonprofits are near and dear to our hearts. Every day, we help our nonprofit partners improve donor relations and fundraising, grow their member base and outreach, develop lead-generating strategies that raise awareness and action for their cause, and so much more.

But our nonprofit partners are not just our clients – they’re organizations that we care deeply for. We’re all about perpetuating a culture of good amongst our team that expands into our community, and giving back to local nonprofits is a key part of that. That’s why we give every full-time employee eight hours of volunteer time off (VTO) each year.

In honor of National Nonprofit Day (August 17), we want to showcase how some of our team members use their VTO through their stories and understand why they choose to give back by contributing their time.

Devon Fiore – Hospice & Community Care

Devon Fiore, Account Manager, has volunteered with Hospice & Community Care, an organization that provides medical, emotional, and spiritual support for individuals and families coping with a life-limiting illness, for around three years.

Hospice & Community Care provides palliative, supportive, and hospice care for almost 500 patients and their families daily. They also offer bereavement support to nearly 9,000 children, teens, and adults annually throughout Pennsylvania.

Devon knows the organization well. Before joining the Graphcom team, she worked as an event coordinator for Hospice & Community Care, running their fundraising events.

“I loved working for Hospice and seeing the organization’s impact on thousands of individuals and families every year. It’s a long-lasting impact; I spoke with people who had a family member in hospice care decades ago and would donate yearly and attend fundraising events to show their support,” says Devon.

Most recently, Devon volunteered for the Light Up A Life Event, a memorial event held annually in the winter at which families can purchase a light to honor their loved ones who have passed.

“There’s a moment at the end of the event where thousands of lights are lit all at once on big pine trees, and it’s completely breathtaking to see that every light represents a loved one or family member who has passed. It’s very emotional and a beautiful representation of life and love,” Devon recalls.

For Devon, volunteering is more than just helping out – it’s about seeing the impact of her work. “I adore volunteering. When I can sit down and talk with a donor or family who says, ‘This organization means so much to me and helped me through an incredibly difficult time with care, grace, and love,’ it’s all worth it in my book. I want to help in any way that I can, and nonprofits always need more volunteers to continue to provide incredible services to their community, no matter what they are. There are little moments within nonprofit work and volunteering when you witness great acts of community care and love, and I like to surround myself with those as much as possible.”

Luckily, when Devon started her career at Graphcom, her passion for giving back wasn’t hindered – but further ignited.

“I think everyone should volunteer! I love that Graphcom offers volunteer time off, and it has snowballed for me into so many areas of my life. My background is in nonprofit fundraising events, and with Graphcom’s focus on healthcare, nonprofits, and education, I knew I could continue my passion for development and fundraising work differently. I’m extremely enthusiastic about everything I do because every day, I get to hear the amazing impact stories, see the change my clients are making, and build more passion behind philanthropy with people who share those passions.”

No matter where you live or what you do for a living or in your free time, I guarantee that there is a need for a volunteer just like you with your skills.”

Meg Steinberger – Relay For Life

Production Manager, Printing, Mailing, & Premedia Meg Steinberger has volunteered with Relay For Life for around 25 years – ever since her church started a Relay For Life team, and she and her mom joined.

Relay For Life is a community-based walkathon fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. It’s an opportunity for local communities to come together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and unite to fight back against every type of cancer.

Meg’s connection to the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life is personal.

“My grandmother lost the fight to breast cancer in 1993 when I was only eight years old. Joining a Relay For Life team was a way to fight back and raise money for the American Cancer Society so that others could win the fight against cancer. My mother fought her own breast cancer battle last year and is now a 1-year survivor. I also have countless friends who are either now survivors or have unfortunately lost the fight. I continue to participate in Relay for them,” Meg says.

For the past 10 years, Meg has served on the Event Leadership Team for Relay For Life of Adams County. Although rewarding, planning fundraisers and the annual event, which takes place in August, is a year-round job.

“We meet monthly to review our goals and fundraising progress. By collaborating with local businesses for sponsorships and donations, we keep expenses low and maximize funds raised. We promote Relay For Life of Adams County and the American Cancer Society at local events, inviting teams to join. I assist with social media, create virtual luminarias, and mentor the current Event Lead after serving in that role for two years. I help organize the survivor/caregiver ceremony, event decorations, fundraisers, and setup/teardown. Additionally, I write an annual article for the local newspaper to highlight sponsorship opportunities,” explains Meg.

Meg was instrumental in creating Graphcom’s Relay For Life team in 2016 and has been a pillar for planning and executing all facets of the event. A few months before the event, our team raises money for the American Cancer Society via bake sales, internal fundraisers, social media, and more. Then, on the day of the event, the team comes together to honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

“Participating in the event after a full year of planning is always rewarding. Seeing the community come together to support the cause and participating in the event ceremonies renews my passion for the cause,” says Meg.

Greg volunteering

Greg Taylor – Habitat for Humanity

Production Coordinator Greg Taylor recently started volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, a global nonprofit organization that builds and improves affordable housing for families in need, after learning about the organization through his church.

“The churches in the community take turns supplying meals for the Habitat for Humanity volunteers. During the congregation, they ask if anyone would like to help,” says Greg.

Remembering Graphcom’s VTO policy, Greg decided to put his time to good use.

“When this opportunity came along, I wanted to volunteer. They were building a house for two families, and I have some knowledge of carpentry, so I thought, ‘I could do this,’” says Greg.

On-site Habitat for Humanity volunteers perform various tasks, including building and renovating homes, assisting with landscaping, painting, and making repairs. Greg was responsible for a hands-on part of the build. Despite some less-than-ideal weather conditions, he made the most of his time.

“I had an amazing experience meeting different people. Even though it was cold and rainy that day, all the volunteers I was with made it fun and enjoyable. I had an awesome feeling of accomplishment when I left,” reflects Greg.

To Greg, volunteering his time wasn’t just a ‘free’ day off from work – it was an eye-opening experience that opened a world of opportunity for him and those he’d helped.

“It really made me feel good to help put a roof over two families’ heads that needed a place to stay,” he says.
